Bann Rim Taan - Coconut GroveKoh Samui lies ten degrees north of the equator. It is Thailand's third largest island and the largest in a group of nearly 100 tropical islands in the Gulf of Thailand. Known as the Samui Archipelago as a whole, only three other islands in it besides Samui are inhabited: Koh Tan, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao. The area of Samui is 280 square kilometers, and measures 22 kilometers at its widest point and 13 kilometers in length. It has a population of 34,000 people.
Dense tropical jungle and mountains rising to a height of 600m cover Samui. The mountains create a web of streams many broken by falls and rapids, some of which are accessible. The island has sandy beaches, coral reefs. A feature of the island is the 3 million coconut trees, some over 100 years old and 35 m tall. Koh Samui enjoys a tropical climate, cooled by sea breezes. The temperature on the island rarely exceeds 34 degrees or drop below 24 degrees. Samui's prevailing weather pattern is governed by the yearly cycle of the south westerly monsoons from the month of September through to November. The monsoons are characterized by days of bright sunshine, broken by occasional drenching downpours, which seldom last more than 2 to 3 hours. The monsoons come to an end in December and are followed by seven months of clear skies and calm seas.
The modern island history began with the first settlers from Hainan Island (In China) who came to the island 150 years ago, but it was first recorded on a Ming Dynasty map around the 1,500 AD. Muslim fishermen, descendents of Malay sea gypsies, were to settle later in the South East. During the 17th and 18th centuries the islands came under the rule of Nakhon Si Thammarat and eventually under the direct rule of Siam. Like the majority of Thailand's population , the Chao Samui, the "people of Samui" are predominantly Buddhist . The brightly colored wats ( temples ) area common sight along most of the islands roads. The Thai national and royal Symbol is the Garuda, a mythical Half bird, half human figure. |
